Some builds are filled with universal plaudits, like restomods or clean swaps. However, not all receive universal acclaim for the polarizing display. However, some special jobs are so unique that you respect the people behind them whether you like them or not.

One such example is Elvis’ (not singer) 1982 Datsun 280ZX. The Roads Untraveled Youtube channel takes a closer look at the classic pastel Datsun that its owners call ‘The Home Depot Special’. For starters, the owner says the car looks “amazing from ten feet away”, but a closer look reveals all its imperfections.

The flared fenders and front bumper are made using sheet metal trim. It also has a custom splitter with matching side skirts and rear fender flares. The rear has a tall duck spoiler and a removed bumper. It rides on NASCAR Aero Race wheels which Elvis says are technically illegal.

Another unique part of this car is the roof box mount. It’s made from the custom exhaust pipe of the 370Z that Elvis owns. Instead of throwing them away, he recycles them into what they are today. For the paint scheme, he claimed to be inspired by the Porsche 935 race car of the Group 5 era.

Powering this custom 280ZX is the original, non-turbocharged 2.8-liter straight-six. That said, it has been rebuilt and now packs a turbo head. Either way, you shouldn’t expect explosive performance from the L28. It put out 145 horsepower (108 kilowatts) and 156 pound-feet (212 Newton-meters) of torque in 1982.

Roads Untraveled host Marcus Vandenberg notes that the suspension takes a few calls, and the steering isn’t the best out there. On the other hand, Vandenberg says that the car’s ‘criminal’ vibe makes it unique. It’s not a rat rod or anything, but it’s something else.

So why is this car so special to Elvis? He said it was his first car, and he learned a lot while repairing it. That said, it is for sale per owner Youtube channeland the listing says it can be yours for 18,500 Canadian dollars.
