The Sound of a Ferrari Le Mans Hypercar Means During An Initial Track Scramble

Ferrari’s return to Le Mans is one step closer to reality. Last month, the Italian automaker revealed that the car would begin testing “in the coming weeks,” and now we have photos and video recording the car on Ferrari’s Fiorano test track. This is our first full look at the upcoming LMH race car that will take Ferrari to its first FIA World Endurance Championship campaign in 50 years.

The Ferrari covers the race car in a full-body camouflage wrap, which hides the stylistic details of the car. However, there are some design aspects that the camo can’t hide, such as its giant rear wing. Also visible are the roof-mounted intakes and the blade-like front end hovering over the large opening. The front fenders are large and sit higher than the body of the vehicle, giving it some odd proportions that can be a camouflage trick.

Ferrari won’t return to Le Mans until next year, giving the automaker plenty of time to test and perfect its race car. This was just the beginning of car development, with cars spending more time in the garage than on the track. However, Ferrari had planned more track time on the proper race track.

Ferrari also teased the drivers, showing the car in reflected light, but showing nothing that the spy shots didn’t reveal. The car looks long and low, and you can also see the large wings. We don’t know what Ferrari will use to power the new drivers, but the video captures the exhaust note, and it sounds downright threatening.

When Ferrari returns to the WEC next year, it will face several competitors thanks to the collaboration between the ACO, FIA and IMSA on the rules for the LMH and LMDh classes. This will allow the two classes, which IMSA considers to be one called GTP, to compete against each other in Europe. Cadillac, Porsche, Acura and others fielded LMDh cars, while Ferrari, Toyota, and Peugeot prepared LMH racers. Le Mans next year looks like it will be full of excitement.
