With just 10 laps remaining on the board at the Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, Cadillac Racing’s Renger van der Zande threw the Cadillac DPi-VR No. 01 passes Acura ARX-05 No. Oliver Jarvis’ 60 to secure the luxury marque’s third win of the 2022 IMSA season.
Jarvis with Acura No. 60 got stuck in a traffic jam in the final stages of the race, allowing the Cadillac No. 01 van der Zande slowly cut his rival’s lead. The feat is particularly impressive, considering that both van der Zande and Sebastien Bourdais were forced to grapple with intermittent power steering issues that cost the Cadillac No. 01 is very difficult to drive around Canadian road lanes. Van der Zande shows off what he and the Cadillac No. 01 was able to do, winning the race by more than three seconds despite suffering.
“That race won’t be ours,” van der Zande said in a post-race interview. “We changed the car completely after warm-up practice this morning and didn’t know what to expect. The change worked, but the power steering failed, and that was the toughest part of the day.”
Regarding his final race pass, van der Zande explained that he has a “now or never” mentality. “I know I need traffic to get through [Jarvis]. Full risk, I thought, ‘It’s time to go,’ and it worked.”
Overall, it was a decent day for the Cadillac Racing team. Pipo Derani and Oliver Pla drive the Cadillac No. 31 for the result in third place, despite having an incident in the early stages of the race. Earl Bamber and Alex Lynn scored fourth at No. 4 DPi-VR, while Richard Westbrook and Tristan Vautier took home sixth.
Only two races remain in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The Road America race will take place on August 4thth, followed by the season finale at Petit Le Mans, which will also be the last race the Cadillac DPi-VR will compete in. It will be replaced at the start of the IMSA 2023 season by the new Project GTP hypercar.
