The Ford Bronco Raptor and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 are apex predators. They are the most powerful models for Ford and Jeep in the off-road-focused SUV segment. Both have over 400 horsepower and a series of upgrades to conquer the road less traveled. But what about paved drag strips?

We really hope owners of the Wrangler 392 and Bronco Raptor enjoy their off-road vehicles, because that’s what they’re made of. But you know there will be asphalt-based battles from time to time, and Fast Track Car offers a glimpse of how the encounter is likely to go down. Now you have to get to know the competitors, which means you’ll find the Wrangler’s naturally aspirated 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine has a significant power advantage. That makes 470 horsepower (350 kilowatts) compared to the 418 hp (312 kW) of the Bronco’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. On paper, it shouldn’t be too close.

There’s an important factor to consider here, and it’s not (just) weight. The race takes place in the Colorado mountains, a full mile above sea level. The general rule for engines is a 3 percent loss of power per every 1,000 feet of elevation, so the Jeep Hemi can drop as much as 15 percent for a race. Forced induction engines also experience less oxygen effect at higher altitudes, but not as badly as naturally aspirated plants. In short, it can actually be a tight race.

But not.

Sorry to spoil the mood, Bronco fans. The Wrangler’s high output V8 is a monster, and it shows in this competition by actually beating the Raptor. Running time reveals a difference of nearly one second between the off-roaders in the quarter mile, with 15.2 for the Jeep and 16.1 for the Bronco Raptor. Just for fun, the team brought a Bronco First Edition model with a 330-hp (246 kW) 2.7-liter V6 to the party. The race between it and the Raptor is actually a little closer than the Jeep fight, an ode to how beefy the truly upgraded Bronco is.

We suspect Bronco Raptor owners won’t be bothered by this outcome. Our own experience behind the wheel reveals a very capable off-roader who enjoys speeding on – or over – almost any surface. However, the bragging rights for this round go to Jeep.
