Just last week, British EV brand McMurtry Automotive announced that it was back at Goodwood to try and break the hill-climbing record set by the Volkswagen ID R in 2019. Their competitor, of course, was the odd-looking mini Batmobile called the Spéirling.
In a valiant effort during the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the adorable short electric fan car approached the time of an electric VW race car but ultimately failed to break the record. The video at the top of this page shows McMurtry Spéirling completing the famous Goodwood hills in 41.29 seconds.

For the record, the Volkswagen ID R has set the Goodwood Festival of Speed on fire in 2019 by completing a hill climb in 39.90 seconds with Romain Dumas at the helm. It broke its own record set in the previous year and eventually carved its name in the history books by setting an overall record.
McMurtry Spéirling’s 41.29 second effort, despite failing to beat Volkswagen, now stands as the second fastest overall. It has surpassed the time set by the McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13 in 1999.
Former F1 driver Max Chilton was the man who drove the Spéirling at Goodwood this year. He also led the development of electric fan cars.
The McMurtry Spéirling is a pure electric track car with a single seat that has a power-to-weight ratio of 1,000hp/ton and weighs under 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilograms). It can run up to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in less than 1.5 seconds – faster than the Bugatti Chiron.
It uses a twin fan system that draws air from under the car, allowing the track toy to use the 4,409 lbs (2,000 kg) of downforce on demand. That system also makes the Spéirling EV the loudest out there as you can hear in the video above.
