As COVID-19 and the global shortage of microchips continues into 2022, new and used vehicle inventories remain low in many locations. Used vehicle prices are rising, and many new cars are selling above the MSRP. But what about new vehicles that are technically used cars? In the case of this 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum, it was advertised for $193,988 – more than $100,000 over its new base price of $90,874.
This isn’t a typo either. Two dealer representatives at World Ford Pensacola confirmed the price over the phone, explaining that Lightning was in very high demand. The dealer buys the truck from a broker, meaning it already has one owner who technically makes it a used vehicle. That’s what it says on the website, showing 139 miles on the odometer and finished in Iced Blue Silver Metallic.
It’s a no-cost color for the highest Platinum trim. Features like Ford’s Co-Pilot360 and a B&O stereo are also standard with the Platinum truck. Except for dealer-installed options, the MSRP of the new Lightning Platinum is $92,669 with destination fees added. Of course, the issue is whether you’ll be able to find Ford’s new electric pickup for sale, as all 2022 models are sold out before the trucks reach dealers. However, at close to $200,000, this is certainly the most expensive F-150 Lightning we’ve ever seen.

Possible impacts on dealerships could include moving a future vehicle allocation to another location, even if the communication appears to be focused on new vehicle activity. It’s not clear if or how used vehicles could factor into the equation.
With destination costs included, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has an initial MSRP of over $40,000 in the Pro trim, aimed at contractors and fleet managers as a work vehicle. The Lightning XLT starts at $54,769, though that includes a standard range battery with an estimated range of 230 miles. Opting for the long range battery with 580 horsepower adds $20,000 to the base price of the XLT, making the Lightning the cheapest long-range at $74,269.
