Winnebago Completes 1,380 Mile Journey In Its Electric RV Concept

Winnebago proved the power of the e-RV electric motor concept by taking the vehicle on a 1,380-mile (2,221-kilometer) journey from Washington DC to Eden Prairie, Minnesota – where the company is headquartered. Winnebago believes this is the first trip of more than 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers) for an electric RV.

The journey takes 26 hours of driving, and the e-RV’s average speed is 53 miles per hour (85.3 kilometers per hour). Its power efficiency reaches 1.58 miles per kilowatt-hour. Average time spent on a DC fast charger is 1 hour 2 minutes.

The total cost of charging along the way is $275, which is much cheaper than combustion-powered vehicles. Winnebago figures that averaging 10 miles per gallon at a national average cost of $5.00 per gallon on this trip would be about $690.

“We are excited to apply the lessons learned from this journey as we continue to refine, explore and innovate on future iterations of the vehicle,” said Ashis Bhattacharya, Winnebago senior vice president.

Winnebago debuted the Ford-Transit-based e-RV concept in January at the Florida RV Super Show in Tampa. The vehicle has an 86-kilowatt-hour battery that provides an estimated range of 125 miles (201 kilometers).

Inside, there are all the amenities you would expect from an RV. Features include 350 volt DC power for water heating, roof-mounted air conditioning with heat pump, sliding induction hob and marine-grade refrigerator. There is a bathroom with toilet and shower.

Winnebago chooses sustainable materials for the interior. For example, there are recycled cork rubber floors. The wool application covers the walls and helps in insulation.

The E-RV is just a concept for now. However, Winnebago said that they intend to use what they learn from vehicle development in future production vehicles. The company did not indicate how soon the electric RV could become part of the lineup.

The RV segment is currently booming. In April 2022, Winnebago reported having a backlog of orders received from dealers worth $4.37 billion. Financially, the company reported revenue growing by $1.2 billion, or 29 percent, in its fiscal second quarter.
