There is something very special about a small camper van. We’ve seen a number of high-quality builds from European, American, and Japanese companies, and we have to admit this is probably our favorite camper segment. There’s a new and very powerful player on the market – and it really comes with everything you need during a quick escape in a realm hidden under a very familiar package.
Meet Free Bird, a small camper produced by Caravan Outfitter, a company inspired by the golden age of Volkswagen camping in the United States. Looking for “the perfect combination of an everyday vehicle with the perfect one for camping,” the team recently updated one of its core models that was originally launched in 2017 as a tribute to the Westfalia. Now, for the 2022 model year, the Free Bird is getting a number of upgrades that make it an even more attractive option in the camper market.

The Free Bird is based on the Ford Transit Connect LWB Passenger Wagon and offers seating for four adults and a fully equipped exterior. More importantly, when the back seat is folded, a full size bed can be placed on it to provide sleeping comfort for two. Also new for 2022 is a redesigned kitchen box at the rear with sink and gas hob, mounted from the Transit Connect cargo area. Last but not least, there is also a folding table that can be used for eating, playing games, or as a workplace.
Caravan Outfitter said it chose Transit Connect as its platform because Ford vans are easy to use, have quality materials and are fun to drive. After all the interior modifications are made, the total weight of the vehicle is approximately 4,160 pounds (1,887 kilograms), which is not much more than the standard vehicle. The company will start taking pre-orders in about 10 days from now and will offer financing and even trade-in options. A number of additional features are offered optionally, including a tent for $850, dual bike carriers for $770, and a rear awning for $395.
