British EV brand McMurtry Automotive returns to the Goodwood Festival of Speed with its quirky yet adorable fan car. McMurtry Spéirling made his Goodwood debut in 2021 but will return this year with the aim of conquering the famous hill climb while setting records in the process.
The McMurtry Spéirling is a pure single-seat electric track car that is claimed to be faster than the Bugatti Chiron. In fact, McMurtry Automotive accelerates the 0-60 mph (97 kilometers per hour) sprint in under 1.5 seconds, with a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h).

McMurtry Automotive did not disclose the Spéirling output figures, although it did mention that the EV has a power-to-weight ratio of 1,000hp/ton and weighs under 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilograms).
However, the Spéirling’s main differentiator is its twin fans that draw air from under the car. The system supports touted instant downforce-on-demand that even doubles its own weight, weighing in at 4,409 lbs (2,000 kg). That said, the Spéirling has more downforce than an F1 car at 150 mph.
With former F1 driver Max Chilton leading the development of the Spéirling, McMurtry Automotive aims to set an overall record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
For the record, the current record holder in the famous hill climb event is the Volkswagen ID R, clocking a time of 39.9 seconds which beats its own record from the previous year.
“Our goal is to win the event and we feel that the record can be achieved if everything is in line for us. Of course, this is motorsport and you can never take it for granted, but we came up with a very competitive package. The last time car enthusiasts competed in motorsport was when Niki Lauda dominated the 1978 Swedish Formula One Grand Prix,” said Thomas Yates, managing director of McMurtry Automotive.
