The thing about a 50cc scooter is, a good “50” spin usually means it’s actually a 49cc engine—and as such, it complies with a large number of licensing laws in various jurisdictions. You see, in many places (including my own state of Illinois), riding a moped or scooter that’s 49cc or lower with a regular driver’s license is totally fine. While still powered by petroleum products, the gas mileage is comparatively much better than what you’d get from any gas powered car.
Some states (again, like Illinois) may have additional provisions, such as the 49cc vehicle in question may not require any gear change. Here, it should be noted that modern 49cc scooters are usually all twist-n-go engines, which shift automatically via a belt-driven, continuously variable, or CVT transmission. (Some vintage scooters need to be moved, but that’s usually not what random car drivers looking for a cheaper means of transportation will buy—at least, not until they become full-fledged scooter enthusiasts. The important thing to remember is, 49cc scooters don’t really do highway speeds. If your regular commute involves surface roads, then you should be fine. There’s storage space under the seat for small items, or you can always add a backpack, top box, or bungee item to the pillion seat. Some scooters even have bag hooks so you have a bonus storage area (if you don’t take turns too fast).
What About Electric Scooters?
In 2022, it is true that today there are more choices of electric scooters available for sale worldwide than there are motorcycles. Depending on where you’re reading this, you may have one (or more) good options that fit your budget, and can completely address your fuel price fluctuation woes. In this case, a smaller battery usually means a smaller range, so take that into account when planning. You’ll also have to adjust to adding one more thing to your plug-in rotation. However, since we’ve all done it with our phones, laptops, smartwatches, and other devices, you probably already have a sizeable power strip.
