Audi RS5 Tries to Defy BMW M240i’s Powerful In Close-Drag Race

The BMW M2 is still months away from debuting, but the automaker’s M240i is no slouch. The new Carwow YouTube video demonstrates the prowess of its performance by pitting the coupe against a hotter Audi RS5 Sportback that produces more power than a much higher priced BMW. Is the additional cost worth the performance? Check out the video above to find out.

The BMW M240i xDrive is at a disadvantage in this contest. Under the hood is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that produces 374 horsepower (278 kilowatts) and 368 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque. The Audi RS5 Sportback has a smaller and more powerful engine. Its 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 produces 450 hp (335 kW) and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque.

Both engines have an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to their all-wheel-drive system. The only advantage BMW has over Audi is its weight. The BMW is lighter at 3,725 pounds (1,690 kilograms) compared to the heavier Audi at 3,825 lbs (1,735 kg).

The first race saw the two slide from the starting line side by side, but as the pair picked up speed, the Audi began to drift away. However, the quarter-mile race didn’t let him get too far ahead of the BMW. Audi finished the race in 12.1 seconds, but BMW was right behind it with a quarter mile time of 12.2 seconds.

The pair of rolling races the two of them participated in was no different. The more powerful Audi was able to keep the BMW in its rearview mirror in both cases, although the second race with both cars in the sportiest settings was closer than the first with the vehicles within their most comfortable parameters.

The BMW M240i xDrive may not have enough power to beat the Audi RS5 in drag racing, but it’s very close. BMW is working on a hotter M2 variant that will debut this October. The coupe will use a twin-turbo inline-six engine that will produce around 450 hp, which would put it on par with the RS5 and possibly ahead of it in drag racing. We’ll have to see a new fight when the M2 arrives.
