The Toyota GR86 will be raced in the United States in 2023 as part of the recently launched GR Cup. The one-make racing series will consist of 14 events at 7 tracks across the US.
Toyota Racing Development (TRD) will build the GR86 Cup car at its facility in Mooresville, North Carolina. Modifications will include Bosch engine management, Borla exhaust, 22-gallon fuel cell, SADEV six-speed sequential gearbox, Alcon brakes, JRI adjustable shocks, and Toyota Gazoo Racing-designed struts. The body will have a front splitter made by Gazoo, a ventilated hood, a carbon fiber rear wing, and other tweaks. Inside, there will be OMP safety equipment and a roll cage.

Toyota has yet to announce the pricing of the GR86 Cup but says the series offers “affordable competition.” Fees and calendars for next year’s events will arrive later this summer.
Racers in the GR Cup will compete for a total of $1 million and prizes from series partners. On the track, competitors will have access to partner-sponsored hospitality and exhibition areas.
In Japan, the GR86/BRZ Cup is already nine years old. The current iteration has two classes: Professional for pro drivers and Clubman for amateurs. The 2022 season has five rounds.
Racing the GR86 and BRZ in Japan had fewer modifications than the Toyota competing in the GR Cup in the US. The only mechanical changes to them are the engine oil cooler and rear differential cover with cooling fins. For the safety of the driver, the stripped cab has a roll cage and seat belts.
Following the arrival of the new generation last year, Toyota maintained interest in the GR86 in the US by launching a Special Edition model. It is available in the exclusive Solar Shift orange with black stripes on the rear pillar. The Gazoo Racing paint-back exhaust has black chrome tips. This vehicle uses 18-inch matte black alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. The duck spoiler is attached to the rear deck. Inside, there’s a mix of faux suede and leather upholstery.
The GR86 Special Edition has a regular 2.4-liter flat four-cylinder model that produces 228 horsepower (170 kilowatts). Buyers can choose a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.
Toyota limited the GR86 Special Edition to 860 units in the US. Prices for it are not yet available.
