The Honda Civic Type R 2023 is approaching its global debut. Planned to happen this month, the next generation of the venerable hot hatchback has been spotted while leisurely strolling down Japan’s highways. Although still covered in camouflage, there were two samples caught on public roads, thanks to FK7 HONDA on Twitter that uploaded the video.

The social media post embedded below has a caption that reads (roughly translated by Twitter):

New Civic Type R

After all, even though this is a mature FK8 print, it has a completely different exterior design. I want to upload a new Type R test drive video as soon as possible.

The prototypes have license plates marked 1 and 2. They were caught (probably) around dusk, that’s why the lights came on, showing us the lighting graph as seen from behind. As expected, the lighting elements are no different from the Honda Civic Hatchback. However, more design deviations from the non-Type R models will be revealed during the debut of the red badge version.

Those elements include an aggressively styled body – though not as aggressive as the previous model – along with the large wings and triple exhaust tips seen on the prototype here. A large set of low-profile wheels will most likely appear in the next-generation model as well.

Official and definitive engine details are scarce at this point, but it can be assumed that the next Civic Type R will have a factory reworked version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter under the hood. In the current iteration of the FK8, the four pots produce up to 306 horsepower (228 kilowatts). Rumors of a 400-hp (298-kW) floated before, but nothing concrete has come out to back up the claim. There will still be a six-speed manual transmission like the previous model.

Honda has officially announced that the next-generation Civic Type R will make its global debut this June, but no specific date has been set yet. The US will launch its own in July during the NTT IndyCar Series event in Mid-Ohio.
