Given that the facelifted version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class will only be introduced in 2021, we don’t expect the automaker to release the next-generation model soon. However, that doesn’t mean Stuttgart doesn’t care about its midsize sedan. Seen several times before, another E-Class prototype has been spied on waiting at a red light in Germany, courtesy of YouTube walkoARTvideos.
The Mercedes E-Class prototype we see in the video at the top of this page is largely similar to the one we saw at the Nürburgring in April. Still very well-hidden, the sedan does provide a hint of the changes implemented by the German manufacturer.

The spy video above gives a close look at the details of the upcoming sedan. The LED daytime running lights above double as turn signals, while the headlights appear to circle around corners even when hidden. The grille and front badge are camouflaged for now, though we can expect some air inlets on the lower bumper, also hiding under camouflage. The black alloy looks generic, so we weren’t expecting this set on the production model.
On the sides, only a few character lines are visible through the cover, although the proportions are clear – there’s a short rear deck, while the exhaust is invisible. Most of the taillight elements are hidden from prying eyes.
There haven’t been any spy shots or videos of the interior of the next E-Class, though we can expect goodness from the S-Class to trickle down to the mid-range model. This means more screens and more driver assistance features are coming.
Meanwhile, powertrain details are scarce at this point. A plug-in hybrid has been seen before, although a gas and a mild-hybrid turbocharged diesel version is also expected. The high-end AMG variant will likely get an electrically assisted turbocharged four-pot powertrain.
The next generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class is expected to debut towards the end of 2023 or even early 2024.
