A class-action lawsuit alleging the Cadillac SRX’s headlights were damaged last year was recently dismissed by a US District Court judge.
Filed by a plaintiff in Virginia who claimed that his 2016 Cadillac SRX’s headlights had been damaged by moisture and were too dim to drive safely at night. Moisture damage is the result of a damaged seal in the headlight housing wearing out, allowing water to collect in the headlight assembly and causing damage to the lens and electrical components. The plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against Cadillac and its parent company, General Motors, alleging that the automaker was aware of the faulty headlight issue prior to the sale of this particular 2016 Cadillac SRX.
However, a judge dismissed this claim, stating that “action for breach of any contract for sale must commence within four years after the cause of action arises,” according to Car Complaints. Since the plaintiffs purchased the vehicle in 2016 and filed a class action lawsuit in 2021, this is considered far beyond the statute of limitations on four years of warranty work. This is despite the plaintiff’s argument that the statute of limitations should be ignored because Cadillac hid the alleged defect from customers. The judge disagreed with this claim, stating that the plaintiff did not have sufficient facts to support his claim.
Plaintiffs argue that Cadillac before realized the damaged headlights when selling the vehicle to him, citing a series of Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that directly referenced and attempted to address the faulty seal in the headlight assembly. However, the judge dismissed this claim as well, stating that the communication “does not specifically refer to the Light Defect claimed by Plaintiff.”
This isn’t the first time that a class action lawsuit has been filed regarding the problematic headlights on the second-generation Cadillac SRX. A similar class action lawsuit was filed in Michigan last year, and SRX owners with similar complaints continue to discuss the topic on our forums about the matter.
