The Devel Sixteen is finally here, in production form. Yes, the long journey of the legendary 16 cylinder hypercar is finally over, as seen in the video above. This is the real deal, made for a specific customer and currently undergoing final tuning. There was only one small problem – it only had eight cylinders. Guess that makes him a Devel Eight, then?

Supercar Blondie had a chance to check it out, but before weeping over the Devel Sixteen that doesn’t live up to its name, read this article and watch the video. By doing so, you’ll find out that the customer of this first car didn’t really want the V16. Apparently, there might be some problems for buyers getting a car with 16 cylinders. That’s all the explanation we gave, so if anyone knows which part of the world you can’t own a Bugatti in, that might be a clue where this Devel is headed.

As you might guess, that means this Devel Sixteen also doesn’t have the 5,000 horsepower (3,728 kilowatts) it was originally promised when it was announced… almost 10 years ago. Instead, there will be 2,000 hp under the long engine cover, thanks to a purpose-built twin-turbocharged V8. We don’t have any details about the engine, but we’ll admit it sounds very healthy. It also seems to be still in the tuning process, so it looks like the 2,000 hp benchmark hasn’t been met yet.

The number two production car, however, will reportedly pack a proper 5,000-hp V16. In fact, that power figure has now dropped to 3,000 hp (2,237 kW), which is still an absurd amount for a road car. And we know the V16 exists, because we’ve seen it in action before. This first model with a V8 targets a top speed of 249 mph (400 km/h) so even with a half cylinder, it’s not slow by any means.

To give credit where it is due, bringing a new vehicle to market is difficult, let alone a radical one like this. The Devel Sixteen is 17 feet long, weighs 5,000 pounds, and looks like nothing else is in the way. From the outside too – inside you’ll find all kinds of components borrowed from the C8 Corvette, but hey, it runs and drives and sounds like a monster. That’s further than many startups get, so we’ll be waiting for the right V16 model to follow.
