One of the fuel-saving features of the third generation Honda Pilot is the stop/start function for the engine. This is a feature common to many vehicles from various automakers, designed to turn off the engine during a temporary stop, such as when you are at a traffic light. When it’s time to leave, the automatic feature restarts the engine. But for some late-model Pilots, that may not be the case.
That’s the point of a new investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which focused on some 194,731 Pilots from the 2016 to 2020 model years. So far, 221 complaints have been reported to the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) regarding the system.
The problem is that the engine fails to restart after stopping, with some reports stating that a jump start is required to start the engine again. Problems that seem specific to the 3.5-liter V6 engine with the nine-speed automatic transmission. According to NHTSA, there have been no reports of accidents, injuries or deaths related to this issue.

ODI officials have met with Honda on this issue several times. Among information from this complaint and other sources, the automaker has “found a correlation” between what customers say and alleged system failures. Thus, it seemed that Honda was aware of the situation. Additionally, the automaker indicated that other vehicles using the same engine/transmission combination experienced the same problem. That includes the Honda Odyssey as well as the Acura TLX and MDX.
NHTSA is investigating the situation further to determine possible security issues that could arise from the failure. Some of the complaints include the engine shutting down prematurely during a short stop, such as a stop sign. Pumping the brakes to get the system working is also mentioned, but sometimes the engine won’t start. For now, there has been no official recall from Honda.
