Goodyear is recalling nearly 175,000 tires that can suffer from tread separation, and fixing this problem can be a challenge. Goodyear manufactured the affected tires from 1996 to 2003, and the tires were primarily used on RVs and trucks. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that these tires experience a higher failure rate in the motor housing when compared to other tires.
The recall affects the model G159 tires measuring 275/70R22.5. NHTSA urges owners with 22.5-inch rims on their RVs to check tires, but the agency goes a step further by asking anyone renting or using motorhomes with 22.5-inch tires to ensure the vehicle doesn’t use retracted rubber. Production may have ended 20 years ago, but NHTSA warns that these tires can be found for purchase online even though selling towed tires is illegal.
According to the agency, Goodyear dealers will replace tires installed on recreational vehicles free of charge. Goodyear also gives owners a $60 voucher to weigh their vehicles. People with tires not fitted to recreational vehicles will receive $500. The company has not yet issued a deadline for notification of the withdrawal.
The recall stems from an investigation that NHTSA opened in 2017 when the agency received court documents about alleged tire damage to motorhomes. At the time, NTHSA said that “This number of claims suggests that the failure may have stemmed from a safety-related defect.”
Tread separation can cause the driver not only to lose control of the vehicle but also to be unable to control it, potentially leading to an accident. At highway speeds, tire damage can be fatal, especially in a vehicle the size of a motorhome, which isn’t always as powerful as a passenger car in an accident.
Tires are an important safety component of a car, and poor quality tires can cause fatal accidents. NHTSA notes that owners may have these tires in reserve, and they should have them checked.
