Drivers in California can now ditch the bulky front number plates in favor of plate-sized vinyl stickers. For those who live in areas where a front number plate is required, using a sticker sounds like heaven as it removes the plastic brackets, holes in the bumper, and it looks even better. That’s especially true on many modern cars with large grilles and little room for a 12-inch wide piece of aluminum.
Currently, California is the only US state with a faceplate requirement that offers this option. You can bet other states are watching, and we know car-crazy fans watching because we’ve heard that much. We also know people are curious about how the process works, even those who don’t live in California. We’re curious too, so we took the time to study what this license plate wrapper is called.
Not for everyone
For starters, not everyone can get a license plate sticker. In fact, most people won’t, at least not immediately. This is a pilot program, established in 2019 under Assembly Bill 1614 and is open to only 0.5 percent of vehicles registered in California. However, the Golden State is home to more registered cars than any other state, 36.2 million according to the most recent information from the California DMV. That means there is room for 1.8 million cars in the pilot program. In addition, the car must have sufficient space in the front fascia to display the decal properly.
Only Available Through One Source
Someone doesn’t just take a photo of their license plate and have a local vinyl shop print it. Alternative vehicle registration must be verified with the Sacramento DMV, and now, Number Plate Wrap is the only company that has been approved for this program.
How Does the Process Begin?
Everything passes the Wrap Plate License. An order is submitted, including vehicle registration information and owner information. These are then sent to the Sacramento DMV for review and acceptance into the pilot program. Once accepted, the vehicle owner receives a letter from the DMV, and the Wrap Plate License gets to work. The cost for the stick-on plate is $93.89 (tax included). Provided that everything goes smoothly without any issues, the vinyl sticker version of your license plate should arrive in about a month.
Installation And Removal
The wrap is in reflective vinyl and is pretty much the same as any other large sticker. The Plat Wrap license says the surface must be clean and recommends wiping the area with alcohol before installation, or for those who are nervous about getting it fixed, a professional installer can handle it. It does not damage paint, works with ceramic coatings, and can be removed using a heat gun to loosen the adhesive.
Pilot Program
The initial test actually started in 2015 by selecting the state-owned fleet vehicle. The program was originally scheduled to run until January 1, 2021, but has been extended with public engagement until January 1, 2023. At that time, the program will undergo evaluation.
