After decades of flirting with concepts, some more realistic than others, VW Commercial Vehicles has finally hit the start button on the Microbus revival. Identity. Buzz rolled off the assembly line in Hannover where the factory has been revamped over the past two years to accommodate the reborn icon. Shipments to European customers will start this fall while US buyers are waiting a long time as shipments won’t start until late 2023.
ID creation. Buzz Cargo has started and now VW is doing the same for the passenger-oriented version. The electric vehicle joins the Multivan (T7) and Transporter (T6.1) at the revamped German plant. To ensure the assembly of the electric person (and cargo) mover will begin smoothly, approximately 4,000 employees receive specialized training.

As previously reported, ID. Buzz starts at €46,455 in Germany for the Cargo model once you factor in the environmental discount. The ID is five seats. Buzz Pro, on sale from €56,606. During 2022, VW Commercial Vehicles targets to assemble 15,000 units. Volume will increase massively to 130,000 vehicles once production reaches full speed.
The US-spec version will differ in that it has a longer wheelbase to accommodate three rows of seats. Meanwhile, VW currently only produces rear-wheel drive models with a single electric motor, namely the ID. Buzz will get a more powerful AWD-equipped derivative with a dual motor setup. Expect somewhere in the 300 hp region considering that’s what the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX offer.
Although there is still a lot of hype around ID. Buzz, it remains to be seen how popular it will be given the steep German prices. Of course, if history had taught us anything, the US spec model would be much more affordable due to the lack of value added tax (VAT). But in a sea of crossovers and SUVs, it won’t be easy for a nostalgic electric bus.
