The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited flipped over during a minor driver-side overlapping crash test from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This repeats the results from 2020 when the agency tested the 2019 example, and it also reverses in this evaluation.
Following the inverted 2019 example, Stellantis made changes to the front structure of the Wrangler Unlimited in an attempt to receive a better score by not falling in the IIHS minor overlap crash.

According to the IIHS report, the safety cage retains the structure of the Wrangler Unlimited, and the restraints control the movement of the doll. Sensors indicate a “significant risk of injury” to the driver’s left leg and foot. Overturned vehicles are a huge problem, and the agency gives it a Marginal score.

But we engineer our vehicles for real-world performance. The Jeep Wrangler has unique and extraordinary capabilities unlike any other vehicle on the road. Real-world data and ongoing demand show the four-door Wrangler meets or exceeds the expectations of the buying public.
It 2022 Wrangler Unlimited also received Marginal rating on the crash test side this time, not Good before. In the back seat, the doll’s head hit the soft upper support and the door window frame. “Inadequate head protection,” according to IIHS.
Depending on trim levels and options, the Wrangler is available with four headlight variants. IIHS rates one of them as Marginal and the other three as Poor – the lowest possible score.
There are several requirements for a 2022 model year vehicle to receive the IIHS Top Safety Pick Award. This includes getting Good scores in all six crash tests. Available front crash prevention systems must have an Advanced or Superior rating in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The available headlight options must be Good or Acceptable.
Getting the more prestigious Top Safety Pick+ is even more difficult. Standard headlights must have a Good or Acceptable rating, in addition to all other requirements for honor.
Starting with the 2023 model year, IIHS added more requirements for the TSP and TSP+ awards. Side impact tests occur at higher speeds and with heavier obstacles. There is a new nighttime pedestrian accident prevention test. And, standard vehicle headlights require a Good or Acceptable score to qualify for the Top Safety Pick award.
