American Honda has released its YTD sales figures for May, showing a big drop in sales performance from the Japanese automaker. With sales of 435,159 units from January to May 2022, American Honda posted a 36 percent decline over the same period last year. This figure includes sales from Honda and Acura in the US.

In May alone, American Honda sold just over 75,000 vehicles – a huge drop compared to the 176,815 units sold in May 2021. The company says supply constraints are to blame, as inventories are at historical lows.

Despite the arrival of the next-generation Honda CR-V this year, the crossover SUV remains the top seller in the lineup, delivering over 17,000 in May and over 93,000 YTD.

Similarly, 11,250 HR-V units have been sold as of May 2022 although the new version will go on sale on 7 June.

Meanwhile, there’s been a bit of gimmicks among the Honda sedans. The Civic typically sells more than the Accord but reports show that the midsize has sold more than the compact car in May – 11,066 units vs 8,147 each.

According to Honda, more than half of Civic and CR-V sales were pre-sales before reaching many Honda dealers.

On the Acura side, SUV sales still outpace sedans, although American Honda remains bullish for the rest of the year as it starts selling the new Integra on June 2, 2022. According to the company, Integra pre-sales remain strong, creating positive energy among Acura dealers.

The story is the same for Honda vehicles as the new model is already scheduled for launch this year. It remains to be seen whether the company will be able to bounce back from the inventory slump that plagued its sales figures.
