Volvo P1800 Cyan Is Coming To America And It Will Cost $700,000

After initially debuting in Europe in 2020, the Volvo P1800 Cyan will debut in the United States at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, on August 9 during Monterey Car Week. Cyan Racing will start taking restomod orders from customers in the US, and prices will start at $700,000.

The P1800 originally debuted in the 1960s and production lasted well into the early 70s. Cyan Racing decided to build this restomod imagining how it would modify cars for racing in the 60s but using technology from today.

Power for the P1800 Cyan comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 420 horsepower (313 kilowatts) and 336 pound-feet (456 Newton-meters). The powerplant has a redline at 7,700 rounds. This factory version is in the Volvo S60 TC1 race car.

The Restomod uses a five-speed Holinger manual transmission in dog-leg first gear. Holinger also supplies a limited slip rear differential.

Cyan Racing overhauled almost every part of the P1800. Only the steel in the original chassis, hood release mechanism, handbrake and windshield wiper remains. For added rigidity, the foundation has additional high-strength steel. The carbon fiber body panels are joined to the structure with adhesives, which make the pieces into the structural elements of the vehicle. The result is a machine that weighs 2,183 pounds (990 kilograms).

The body features enlarged wheelbases and a wider track to accommodate 18-inch wheels. The company also pushed back the greenhouse versus the original, which made the hood even longer.

The suspension also received some changes. The original live rear axle was lost, and an independent arrangement of Cyan’s own design replaced it. There’s an adjustable double-wishbone setting at either end, and owners can tweak compression and rebound for dampers at all four corners. The rear anti-roll bar has adjustable stiffness.

Cyan Racing wants P1800 drivers to have a direct connection to the road. To make this happen, there are no stability controls, anti-lock brakes, or even brake boosters.

Cyan Racing has its roots in Polestar before Volvo acquired the brand. Cyan is an organization that is completely independent of the automaker and focuses on motorsports. “Our company was founded in 1996 to race Volvo in Sweden and the Volvo P1800 Cyan closed the circle for us,” said Christian Dahl, CEO and founder of Cyan Racing.

While all images of the P1800 Cyan show it in the brand’s custom blue, the company plans to show it in a different color when showcasing the car at The Quail.
