The world wasn’t over when Rolls-Royce and Bentley came out with their own sports cars and we’re sure Ferrari won’t bring the apocalypse. It’s 2022 and everyone wants an SUV, including one-percenters. Maranello will catch up to the Cullinan and Bentayga with its own 12-cylinder SUV, but with more focus on the “S” than the “U.” Prior to its launch in the coming months, Purosangue (Italian for “pure race”) has been tested.
Announced a few weeks ago for a “game-changing” model, the V12 will be at the heart of Ferrari among SUVs. Fans will be pleased to hear that Prancing Horse engineers have found a way to keep the high-capacity engine alive in an era of downsizing. Stricter regulations imposed by the authorities to reduce emissions have seen smaller turbocharged engines dominate the auto industry, but the Purosangue will have a naturally aspirated V12.

We can hear it in an adjacent spy video of a near-production prototype carrying thinner camouflage. Sounds like a rev-happy engine that eliminates forced induction and which we can assume is pretty powerful. How many? Your guess is as good as ours. What we do know is that the 6.5-liter unit inside the 812 Competizione makes 830 horsepower and 510 pound-feet (692 Newton-meters).
However, Ferrari has noted to say a more powerful V12 is on the way. The Italians have refrained from specifying whether it will make its way into the Purosangue or a sports car, so we’ll have to wait until later this year when the vehicle will celebrate its world premiere. Being a massive four-door model with all-wheel drive, we thought it would be the heaviest Ferrari ever, so it’s going to take all the muscle it can get to live up to the badge.
While still undercover, the most practical Ferrari of all already looks much sportier than most SUVs out there. In fact, we get the impression that it looks more like an enlarged hot hatchback as the generous ground clearance we usually associate with SUVs has given way to a slimmer silhouette.
The company has promised to keep the Purosangue as exclusive as its traditional sports car. Not only that, Ferrari will use the same strategy to give priority to existing customers, but this SUV is also expected to attract new buyers for the brand. Much like the convertible Roma coupe and Portofino, the upcoming model will help the Maranello entice younger customers.
