The seventh-generation Ford Mustang is coming soon, and will keep the V8 engine under the hood. A special package and a higher-powered variant over the GT are almost guaranteed, but the nature of the model remains unknown. New spy photos from Dearborn suggest that Mach 1 could be one of them.

A single prototype clad in thick camouflage was spotted on the road, and looks rather aggressive. It drives a wheel/tire combo we’ve never seen before, and there’s no missing large quad exhaust outlet at the rear. By itself, we don’t necessarily think Mach 1 because it has been a limited trim for decades, with the exception of the second-generation Mustang II which is a package of looks. But this particular prototype was photographed following the new Mach 1, and we can’t ignore the similarities to the tire width and exhaust liner. There are also large visible brakes behind the front wheels.

That said, the prototype doesn’t appear to have a big Mach 1 spoiler on the decklid. Looking ahead, the hood and front fascia look similar to previous spy shots which we believe show the GT prototype. Large wings and a prominent chin spoiler are available on the Mach 1 in Premium trim, but the standard version omits those items for a refined look. In short, we can’t say one way or another that this prototype is the Mach 1 generation. The fat tires, big brakes and bold exhaust tips could represent a GT performance package, a Shelby model, or even a new Boss. . But the fact that it follows Mach 1 is certainly interesting.

In the last 40 years of Mustang history, only four have featured Mach 1. The 2003-2004 model marked the end of the fourth generation pony, featuring a naturally aspirated DOHC V8 Cobra version with a shaker hood, producing 305 horsepower. The moniker was resurrected in 2021, offering a mix of Shelby suspension and aero components with a tweaked 5.0-liter V8 producing 480-hp.

The seventh-generation Ford Mustang will debut in 2023 as a 2024 model.
