The Maserati MC20 Cielo is the official name for the convertible version of the Italian brand’s mid-engined model. The full launch of the vehicle took place on May 25.
Cielo is the Italian word for “sky”, which is a fitting name for a roofless model. “Cielo represents a different concept of performance and an unparalleled multi-sensor driving experience. When the roof is open, new possibilities are reached,” according to the brand description for the YouTube teaser video.
Maserati will build the Cielo on the same assembly line as the MC20 coupe at Ciro Menotti’s Viale plant.
In December 2021, Maserati released a gallery of images showing the MC20 Cielo with the roof attached. The camouflage has a pattern depicting clouds over a sky blue background, which may have been the initial temptation of the model’s name.

Judging from the pictures, the MC20 Cielo appears to have a double-bubble roof. The top may be kept where the coupe has a clear engine cover, meaning that droptop buyers could lose sight of the Nettuno V6.
Power should still come from the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 as the coupe. That produces 621 horsepower (463 kilowatts) and 538 pound-feet (729 newton-meters). The power station has two spark plugs per cylinder and a pre-chamber combustion system derived from the F1. An eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to the rear axle.
The coupe reaches 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of 201 mph (323 kph). The mechanism for folding the roof will add weight, so the Cielo may be a little slower.
When the MC20 launched, Maserati confirmed that a convertible and electric variant was on the way. According to product plans starting in 2020, the MC20 EV will also debut this year. The company hasn’t leaked a timeline for the EV’s debut, and it’s unclear if the electric Cielo will be in production.
