Pininfarina’s New Hydrogen-Powered Vehicle Has Removable Fuel Tanks

Electric vehicle batteries are likely to dominate the auto industry in a few decades. The future remains to be written, and some believe there will be room for hydrogen-powered vehicles. Established car manufacturers like Toyota, BMW, Hyundai and others are very advanced with this technology, but they are not alone in this endeavor.

NamX, which calls itself an “Afro-European industrial and technological venture,” partnered with Pininfarina to design a new vehicle powered in part by a patented removable tank system. NamX didn’t go into detail about how the technology works, but we expect to get more information when the vehicle makes its public debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall. The vehicle will then enter the development stage in 2023.

The company hopes to have the vehicle on the market by the end of 2025, with prices ranging from €60,000 to €95,000 ($62,417 to $98,828 at today’s exchange rates). NamX did not specify where it would sell it, although its removable tank system and limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure would limit it.

When it arrives, it will be available in two configurations. There will be an entry-level, rear-wheel drive version that produces 300 horsepower (223 kilowatts). It will be limited to a top speed of 124 miles per hour (200 kilometers per hour), reaching 62 mph (100 kph) in 6.5 seconds. The all-wheel-drive GTH will pump out 550 hp (410 kW), top out at 155 mph (250 kph), and hit 62 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Pininfarina, the famous Italian design house, writes the crossover style. This crossover features an upright front end, a long hood, and a steep windshield that runs down the sloping roof. The X motif outlining the larger grille is present on the side profile of the crossover, making the doors wrinkle. Pininfarina also has a career of more than decades in designing hydrogen vehicles.

There are still a lot of questions surrounding NamX, and they won’t be answered any time soon. Although automakers have been working on hydrogen-powered cars for years, they have never attracted mainstream consumers. However, hydrogen can play an important role in global efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants as BEVs face similar adoption challenges, such as limited charging infrastructure.
