The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Chronograph Aston Martin F1 Edition is the latest collaboration between the Swiss watchmaker and the British automaker. Limited to just 306 units – referring to the total distance in kilometers from the 2022 British Grand Prix at Silverstone – the chronograph is bold enough to feel right at home on the F1 grid.
At the digital launch event, Aston Martin F1 Team Principal Mike Krack said that the relationship between his team and the designers at GP was “We are always trying to find lighter and stronger solutions.” In any case, this Laureato incorporates some impressive innovations.
This watch offers the first two for Girard-Perregaux: a new composite material for the case, as well as one for the very thick strap.
The 44-millimeter case incorporates the company’s premiere use of a process that blends titanium powder and carbon fiber cut. The materials were taken from two Formula One cars from the 2021 season (“No crashed cars were used,” assures Krack.) The materials were then mixed with colored resin to create a green hue.
The result is a case that has a similar appearance to forged carbon fiber. If you look closely, you’ll notice a subtle green touch to the material that matches the watch’s “Racing Green” dial and the Aston Martin F1 car color.
Another new element for the Girard-Perregaux is the strap construction. Synthetic rubber and some carbon elements sourced from the aforementioned F1 car. The company calls the resulting material GP Rubber Alloy, and naturally has been rendered in the same Aston Martin Racing Green. There’s a fabric effect faade on the outside and a titanium buckle capable of micro-adjusting for a snug fit.
Girard-Perregaux provides elements of the Laureato Aston Martin F1 Edition’s dial design elements that take inspiration from racing cars. The dial is painted in eight layers of Racing Green with a cross-hatching pattern. The opening in the hand should generate the vehicle inlet used for cooling. The hands for the seconds and on the 9 o’clock chronograph register are forged in AMR lime green like accents on the F1 engine.
For the first time on a Laureato Absolute Chronograph, the back of the watch has a sapphire crystal that allows for viewing of hand-finished movement. To non-watch fans, this may seem like an afterthought but GP tells us that there are as many as five types of finishes on a single bridge in motion.
The Laureato Aston Martin F1 Edition uses the GP03300-1058 Girard-Perregaux movement with 63 gems. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of 46 hours.
If you want to add this gorgeous green chronograph to your collection, or just wear it when you drive the DBX707, you’re going to have to shell out $27,800. Very little if you assume you’ll be wearing the same watch as Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll (at least for one season).
Krack assured us that both riders would be wearing the new GP on the grid, but stated, “I’m not sure they’ll be able to wear it in the race.” Just ask Lewis Hamilton.
This is the third timepiece to come from the partnership between Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux. The first is the Tourbillon with the Three Flying Bridges Aston Martin Edition. They followed suit with the Laureato Chronograph Aston Martin Edition.
