It’s been over a year since we first saw Porsche test the high-riding 911. From the start, it was pretty clear what the company was developing, but details were scarce. The new, unofficial renderings take what we’ve seen so far and try to predict what Porsche will reveal. However, we already know the most significant changes to come to the model, which may coincide with the 911 receiving a mid-cycle update.
It’s hard for the automaker to hide the taller suspension with some camouflage and cladding, so the rendering doesn’t have much to say. It looks like a high-riding 911; however, the rendering does exhibit design changes that the model can accept. Renders show a 911 with extra cladding around the wheel holes and along the jamb. The coupe also sports a new front bumper design that Porsche hid in our spy shots, which we’ll also see in the upcoming 911 refresh.
We still don’t know what powertrain Porsche will include in the model, although current thinking believes it will come from the Carreras 4S. It’s an all-wheel-drive setup paired to a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six that makes 443 horsepower (329 kilowatts) and 390 pound-feet (528 Newton-meters) of torque. Porsche could change those power figures for the Dakar, or the powertrain could get a boost alongside a mid-cycle refresh.
There are at least two things we still don’t know about the new 911 – its official name and its debut date. We expect the 911 Dakar – or 911 Safari – to debut at some point this year. That could break the cover alongside the rest of the updated 911 lineup. However, it feels a little more special, and companies can host special events. The Porsche here shows you don’t necessarily need a crossover.
