Porsche is always looking at new niches for its 911 lineup, and this is the first spy shot of what we believe to be the upcoming ST variant. It pays homage to the jogger racing model of the early 1970s.
The new ST uses the Porsche 911 GT3 Touring as a starting point. The front end doesn’t seem to change until your eye reaches the extra panel behind the front wheel. We saw something similar, albeit a less aggressive version, on the 911 GT3 RS development vehicle. The ST also has a double-bubble roof from the recently launched Sport Classic.
It’s a small detail, but the 911 in this shot has a pull-out handle for its door. We also saw these pieces in a GT3 RS spy shot. In comparison, the ones in the regular GT3 are mostly flat to the body.
The 911 is driven on center-lock wheels with wide Y-shaped spokes. Large drilled disc brakes are visible behind it.
At the rear, there is a black circle on the engine cover mesh. Our spies believe this is the location of the Porsche Heritage logo like the one on the Sport Classic. The rear diffuser with a pair of center-exit exhausts in the middle seems to be the same part of the 911 GT3 Touring.
Recent info suggests the new 911 ST will share the engine with the GT3 Touring. If so, the model will have a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine that produces 502 horsepower (374 kilowatts) and 346 pound-feet (469 newton-meters).
We have no info on when the 911 ST will debut.
According to rumors from 2021, Porsche is planning to build three legacy versions of the 911. The first is the recently debuted 911 Sport Classic. ST comes next. Lastly, there is the suspicion that the RS has been revived. Details about the latter are still sketchy, but the changes reportedly include a duck spoiler, retro-style upholstery, and significant weight.
Porsche only makes a handful of original STs. They are race cars with a focus on weight loss with pieces like lighter body panels. Flared fenders make room for a wider track.
