2023 BMW iX1 Teased Playing In The Snow With Dual-Motor AWD Setup

After the iX and iX3, BMW reduced its electric crossover recipe for the iX1. The fully electric derivative of the third-generation X1 will look pretty much the same as its ICE-powered counterpart as the two will share the FAAR platform, an evolution of UKL underpinnings. Along with plug-in hybrid versions, all three compact X models were shipped to northern Sweden where the BMW Group has a winter testing center.

Looking mature, the iX1 has to endure frigid temperatures and snowy roads. It will rely on the BMW Group’s fifth-generation eDrive technology, and unlike the Chinese-made iX3, it will come with xDrive. The more expensive EV versions will have dual motors, which will not only deliver AWD but some serious power. If you prefer a good combustion engine, there will be the spicy X1 M35i with around 300 hp and four exhaust tips.

BMW has crunched the numbers and says the iX1 will cover 438 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. However, it should be noted that this is not a final range number, but rather an estimate based on the vehicle’s current development status. Having entered the final testing phase, it seems highly unlikely that the numbers will change dramatically for a production-ready model. We expect a similar figure from the MINI Countryman EV, with both to be assembled at the Leipzig factory in Germany.

The petrol and diesel X1 will go on sale this fall, meaning official reveal is slated to take place in the coming months. BMW says the iX1 will hit the market soon. Logic tells us that the base version will not have xDrive as you will be required to upgrade to a more expensive configuration to get a dual motor setup.

There will be other ways to have both an electric motor and AWD as the revamped crossover will continue to offer a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It’s believed that won’t happen to the Countryman as MINI will reportedly cancel the PHEV setup. Spy shots and teasers have revealed both models will be getting bigger, which may explain why the Oxford-based marque is allegedly planning a smaller crossover to be placed under the new Countryman.
