The Toyota GR Corolla is being molded into a stunning hot hatch. It won’t go on sale until later this year, but put Toyota’s Formula Drift driver Ken Gushi behind the wheel to show off the car’s capabilities on track and dirt. However, Gushi goes a step further by providing some essential racing tips that anyone can use when they are on their next race track.

Gushi provides a thorough overview of some of the basics of racing both on track and on the ground. The new GR Corolla comes with all-wheel drive, giving the hatch more agility than ever before. Gushi starts off by covering braking and cornering, pointing out the difference between how a car handles on asphalt compared to how it works on the ground. Gushi also provides an overview of how to properly brake heel-and-toe and left foot, which can cut precious seconds off your lap time.

The Toyota GR Corolla has some substantial improvements over the standard model. Power is a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder G16E-GTS that produces 300 horsepower (224 kilowatts) and 273 pound-feet (270 Newton-meters) of torque. The power is channeled through a six-speed manual gearbox with rev-matching function. Gushi also demonstrates how to perform a heel-and-toe move for those who own a car that doesn’t have this useful feature. The hatchback’s all-wheel drive system has a selectable torque sharing setting.

Toyota went beyond upgrading the Corolla’s powertrain to make the GR variant. This model uses a modified version of the GA-C platform, although it receives additional weld points and structural adhesive for extra rigidity. Toyota uses aluminum for the front doors and hood to keep weight down.

The GR Corolla goes on sale before the end of the year in its Core variant, while the hotter Circuit Edition variant will arrive in 2023. Toyota has seen so much demand that it had to notify dealers in parts of the country last month to stop taking orders. The company plans to produce just 6,500 units in the first year, and it looks like it will be difficult to drive both on and off the track. Toyota has not announced a price for the car.
