The next-generation Civic Type R was spied on for the first time in May 2020 but it wasn’t until October 2021 when Honda teased the hot hatch. We’ve seen several official previews since then, and now we finally know when the red disguise will appear. Talk with Car sell magazine, Honda Australia director Stephen Collins announced the world debut will take place next month:
“He [2023 Honda Civic Type R] will be shown in full – there is a lot of disguise on display – in June during the European summer.”
Its global premiere will be followed by a first appearance in the US in early July during the NTT IndyCar Series event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Surprisingly, the prototype that Honda will show in Ohio will still be in disguise.

Believed to be the flagship anthem for petrol-only Honda in Europe, the new Civic Type R is expected to use an evolution from its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The old FK8 model boasts a healthy 316 hp, but fans are hoping engineers will find more horses in the stables. The initial rumors about the hybrid seemed unfounded, so purists can most likely rest assured that CTR will stick to the ICE formula.
Honda has confirmed that the hatchback-only Civic Type R will be offered exclusively with a manual gearbox, as is the case with the Si sedan. It’s likely that the next-generation model will want to regain the lap record around the Nurburgring for the fastest front-wheel-drive production car. The title currently belongs to the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R with a record time of 7 minutes 40.1 seconds which was set in April 2019.
With three pedals, a powerful petrol engine and no electrification, the Civic Type R will be one of the last affordable performance cars to stick to the traditional formula. At the same time, it will look much more civilized than its zealous predecessor. That said, it will still have the massive rear wing and triple exhaust system of the Ferrari 458 Italia.
