Legendary automotive presenter Richard Hammond has been working to hone his car reviewing skills for decades. The Richard Hammond we used to see on Top Gear and the Grand Tour took years to develop his car reviewing skills at a lesser known event called Granada Men & Motors. To see how far he has come in the world of automotive television, Richard sat down and watched some clips of his first car review show for the YouTube channel Drivetribe.
If you’re not familiar with Richard Hammond, he was Jeremy Clarkson’s original co-host on the new BBC Top Gear when it debuted in 2002. Prior to joining Top Gear, Richard cut his teeth as an automotive presenter for a show called Men & Motors, which airs on Granada channel. Today Richard still works with his team from Top Gear including Jeremy Clarkson and James May on their Amazon Prime show The Grand Tour.
Richard worked on Top Gear from 2002 to 2015 when Top Gear was on a brief hiatus following the departures of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May.
From there, Richard joined other former Top Gear presenters on their own Amazon Prime Show called the Grand Tour which is still in production today.
The first clip of Richard’s early car review shows him at the Auto Show where he gives an overview of the new Morgan V8. Richard was highly critical of his youthful reviewer persona but was surprised to learn that he stated Morgan used wood in their chassis, which is a major inaccuracy.
Next up was the review Richard presented for the R53 Mini Cooper S. Richard went into detail about how low budget the review was and how little time he spent with the subject car. The funny part is that in those days Richard didn’t even own a car so a week’s worth of press cars would have helped him immensely.
Even though a lot has changed, it’s even more amazing to see how similar Richard’s current broadcast work is to his early days. Of course his hair has changed, but still the same enthusiastic Richard Hammond shares his love of cars with his fans.
