Volkswagen first hinted at the Golf R’s electric equivalent last year when it unveiled the ID.X as a conceptual hot hatch without a combustion engine. A few months later, Peeps from Wolfsburg announced there would be a production model at some point, but without giving an exact timeframe. Luckily, we now have an idea of when the ID.3 GTX will launch.

Speaking to media in Austria at the local launch of the ID.5 SUV, VW product line spokesman Martin Hube explained the GTX will be based on the ID.3 facelift. Some had hoped to see a feisty hatchback in early 2022, but the mid-cycle update to the compact EV won’t arrive until 2023. When it does, it will join the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX in what will become the model lineup. VW performance-oriented electric.

“[For the] ID.3 facelift…we’re going to get some really interesting details and of course, we’re sure that customer expectations will be a little more power, for all-wheel drive it’s there, and [the] customer wants is what we have to fulfill.”

Just like the performance SUV bearing the GTX logo, the new ID.3 GTX will have all-wheel drive adopting a front-mounted electric motor. While the ID.X concept has a solid setup at 329 hp, VW has revealed its next production car won’t be as powerful. Given that the ID.5 GTX takes 6.2 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from rest, the ID.3 GTX should have a sprint of less than six seconds because it will be lighter.

Some will remember VW also teasing the ID.3 convertible, but that hasn’t received the stamp of approval yet. It’s easy to see why given the demand for cabrios has plummeted in recent decades. However, the design sketches published last year have evolved into a driveable concept car.

Oddly enough, the sole model from VW’s core brand with a folding roof is the T-Roc Convertible. It’s a wacky crossover-cabrio blend in the same vein as the ill-fated Range Rover Evoque Convertible.
