Corvette Z06 Models Outside US Won’t Have Center-Exit Exhaust

The Chevy Corvette Z06 that we will get in the US will not be the Z06 sold elsewhere around the world. Strict emission regulations in Europe and Australia require extra exhaust pipes, making it difficult to attach the Z06 floating quad center-exit exhaust pipe to the model.

Instead, these Z06s will go on sale in places like Europe and Australia with a corner exit exhaust system. The reason? Chevy needed to install a gasoline particulate filter, and the exhaust system didn’t match the center exit design. The packaging didn’t work, which was a shame because Chevy’s engineers spent two years perfecting it to get the sound right.

Based on CorvetteBlogger.comwhich took notice of pre-production Z06s with out-of-corner systems and pressured automakers about the discrepancy, Chevy would install filters on cars headed almost everywhere but North America and the Middle East.

The filter can also dampen the naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 engine by Chevy. In the Z06, that makes 670 horsepower (500 kilowatts) and 460 pound-feet (623 Newton-meters) of torque. However, CorvetteBlogger.com did some calculations and found that the filter reduced horsepower by two to four percent in the 495-hp (364-kW) Corvette Stingray. A similar drop could occur with the Z06.

Chevy introduced the Z06 last October, but we’re still a few months away from starting production, which will kick off later in the summer. Chevy also hasn’t released pricing information for the model, although we expect it to start at around $90,000 in the US.

The car has several upgrades beyond a more powerful powertrain, which can propel the two doors to 60 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 2.6 seconds. Extra power requires extra cooling, so it has a new face too. The Z06 also received wider stance, large wheels measuring 20 and 21 inches, and a specially tuned suspension.

The Z06 is the first of several Corvette variants that will see the iconic model pushed into the future with new technology. One will be an all-wheel-drive hybrid, while the other will be a fully electric variant. The hybrid could go on sale before the end of next year.
