Honda Civic Type R Prototype Will Have US Debut On July 1 At Mid-Ohio

The new Honda Civic Type R is coming, really. We started seeing a disguised prototype almost a year ago, followed by Honda’s official teaser campaign that kicked off last October. Now, the teaser campaign is coming to US shores with a planned appearance of the Type R prototype slated for early July in Ohio.

In particular, Honda will be present during the NTT IndyCar Series event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course from July 1-3. Given that the main race is the Honda Indy 200, it should come as no surprise that the automaker will have a huge presence on the track that weekend. It’s the ideal time to give Honda fans a taste of the new Type R, though sadly, it’s not the official reveal we’ve been waiting for. The prototype will still wear camouflage, though Honda plans to send the hot hatch around the track for a few demonstration laps. It will also lead the field for the Indy race on July 3.

This occasion marks the first official appearance of the next Type R in the United States. It’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen him on the track. Spy photos have captured the Type R test vehicle hitting the Nurburgring on several occasions. Recently, Honda released an official teaser video of a test car going full-on at Suzuka, setting a new FWD record held by the current Civic Type R. The lap time is 2 minutes, 23.1 seconds – almost a second faster than the lap time. previous time.

We’ve seen a lot of Civic Type R test vehicles, but Honda is still cautious about what goes under the covers. Rumors have suggested there could be a hybrid powertrain pushing up to 400 horsepower, but with the recent in-car video from Suzuka, that seems highly unlikely. The evolution from the current 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine is a safe assumption, creating a bit more power sent through a manual transmission.

With Honda planning to show a disguised prototype in July, that means the official debut of the 2023 Civic Type R is at least a few months away.
