The Cadillac Racing team did not win the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Laguna Seca, but the DPi-VR No. 31 still managed to take home the podium.
Pipo Derani and Tristan Nunez share the driver’s seat of the Cadillac No. engine. 31 to finish third in a two hour 40 minute race on 1 Mayst. No. 31 followed by No. The 5 DPi-VR driven by Tristan Vautier and Richard Westbrook came in fourth, and fifth place went to Cadillac Racing team Earl Bamber and Alex Lynn behind the wheel of the No. machine. 02.
“I’m very happy to come out of this race with the best Cadillac,” said Derani in a post-race interview. “I think we did the best we could. It’s a great day for the team. We had to work hard on the Whelen Engineering car over the weekend. But came race day, it was really good. I am very happy.”
Derani has finished third at Laguna Seca four times in the last four years, but he remains optimistic. “Keeping car No. 31 on the podium here for four years in a row is quite positive,” he said.
While three Cadillac racing teams finished in the top five, the DPi-VR No. 01 wasn’t that lucky. Machine No. 01, driven by Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande, scored 32and at the end of the race – the last die. Power supply issues became apparent early in the race, and while the crew attempted to fix the problem by swapping out some components, the problem persisted. Caddy No. 01 ended up retiring and didn’t finish the show.
Two Acura teams beat a Cadillac racing team. NSX No. 10, piloted by Ricky Taylor and Felipe Albuquerque, took the win, followed by the Acura No. 60 from Tom Blomquist and Oliver Jarvis in second place.
IMSA season continues at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on May 13th through 15th.
