Volkswagen is now testing the next-generation Passat with its production body, which is still heavily camouflaged. One of Europe’s favorite family vehicles is back in a new spy photo set and this time, we have a chance to take a look at its interior.
From what we can see, the cabin of the Passat will be completely redesigned and will feature a new dashboard with a cleaner design and more digital gadgets. On the center console, there is a large tablet-style screen, very similar to the one on the Volkswagen ID model. The HVAC control is integrated into the same module and most likely has a capacitive touch function. Not the most convenient way to control your cabin temperature, but it seems the technology is spreading across the products of almost all Volkswagen Group brands for cost-saving reasons.

Another big change compared to the outgoing Passat is the gearshift. Whereas the current model has a conventional lever located on the center console very close to the front armrest, it seems that the new model will switch to a steering column mounted shifter. From these early photos, the controller looks very similar to the one Mercedes-Benz uses in some of its models. The center console, on the other hand, is still covered in bolt disguises and it’s hard to tell what’s hidden underneath.
The steering wheel – although different from the current Passat in Europe – looks like the typical Volkswagen steering wheel seen on the current Golf and electric models from the ID range. It uses capacitive touch buttons for volume, phone control, and possibly cruise control functions. A fully digital instrument cluster can be seen in front of the steering wheel.
The B9 generation of the Passat will grow a bit in dimensions and will be produced in Slovakia alongside the next generation Skoda Superb. Expected to be the last combustion-powered Passat and only offered in wagon form. The all-electric equivalent, tentatively called the Aero B, will be available in the same segment, but perhaps only as a sedan.
