The live-action Hot Wheels film took a step closer to hitting theaters as Mattel and Warner Bros struck a deal with JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot company to produce the film. The company did not say when they were targeting the film’s release.
The announcement includes a brief description of what they expect from the film. “The high-speed action film will bring this beloved multi-generational franchise to life and feature some of the hottest and coolest cars, monster trucks and motorcycles in the world.”
There are no other details about the film at this time. There aren’t even any casting details yet.
Hot Wheels is a 54 year old brand. According to the NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service, it is the world’s best-selling toy with more than eight billion vehicles sold.
Mattel and Warner Bros. started developing Hot Wheels movies in 2019based on Variation. It was the second deal between the companies after partnering in the Barbie film starring Margot Robbie and coming in 2023.
In 2016, Justin Lin developed the film Hot Wheels with his production company Perfect Storm Entertainment. Universal will distribute it. Based on Variationthe options expired on the deal, and Mattel returned the film to the market, leading to a deal with Warner Bros.
Lin was recently reportedly stepping down from directing the tenth film in the Fast and Furious franchise after just days of production. He remains a producer on the project.
Hot Wheels recently showcased a collection of vehicle models depicting EVs. They include the Audi E-Tron GT, Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400, GMC Hummer EV, Lucid Air, and the Nissan Leaf RC Nismo race car.
Mattel has also started offering Hot Wheels as a non-fungible token (NFT). The first series launched in 2021, and the second batch arrived in 2022. Recent releases include vehicles such as the 1991 GMC Syclone, 1971 Buick Riviera, 1967 Oldsmobile 442, 1955 Chevy Bel Air Gasser, Corvette C8.R, Honda S2000, Civic Type R, Acura NSX 1990, and the 2001 Acura Integra GSR.
