What started as a high-speed stunt on the German Autobahn could result in two years in prison for one Bugatti Chiron owner. According to UK’s SunGerman prosecutors are investigating the driver who ran 259 mph on the well-known road, who also reported that police have confirmed that they have submitted files to prosecutors about the incident.
The video, which shows a 58-year-old Radim Passer behind the wheel, captures the car speeding at 259.1 miles per hour (471 kilometers per hour). The car has an electronically limited top speed of 261 mph. A spokesman for the prosecutor’s office said they were looking into “possibly prohibited races.”

Passer posted the video on November 30th, but didn’t make the news until recently when Associated Press reported that local authorities had criticized the action. Even the German Ministry of Transport was not impressed by the video. Passer returned to the Autobahn trying to break his old speed record he had set in 2015 when he hit 250 mph (402.5 kph).
While a Passerby’s high-speed run takes place on an unrestricted section of the Autobahn, there are still rules he must abide by, such as ensuring that, “Anyone participating in traffic must behave in such a way that no one else is harmed, threatened or hindered or feels discomfort is more than unavoidable in the situation.” Passer insists that safety is the top priority.
There has been increased talk of adding a speed limit to the unrestricted section of the Autobahn. However, these talks do not necessarily put driver safety at the forefront. Instead, the limit is more on reducing harmful emissions in the face of increased taxes to help fight climate change. At the end of last year, a study found that 60 percent of people in Germany support the 81-mph speed limit. Thirty-eight percent voted in favor of unlimited highways. Either way, Chiron’s actions will likely keep the conversation going.
