EarthCruiser, one of America’s largest land vehicle manufacturers, is moving to a new platform for some of its models. The company switched to the Isuzu NPR Series Class 4 platform, which replaced the previous Fuso platform. This step includes EarthCruiser’s next-generation EXP and FX models, as well as the CORE model.
The company combined the new architecture with its 4×4 drivetrain and implemented upgrades to the platform to create “the most agile and capable vehicle in its class.” EarthCruiser says the new Isuzu platform provides the ideal size and footprint for an adventure vehicle of this class and also delivers solid performance and reliability. The result, the company said, is the only all-wheel-drive cab-over in this segment in the United States.

The Isuzu platform is built in Wisconsin and uses an American-sourced 6.6-liter V8 powertrain. Manufactured by General Motors, this unit has a peak output of 350 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque and is used in GM’s line of Heavy Duty pickup trucks.
EarthCruiser says the cab-over platform concept offers “unmatched” visibility, which helps in off-road situations. Moreover, models based on such a platform come with impressive maneuverability. What is perhaps the most important factor for an overlanding camper vehicle, however, is that the platform allows for the shortest possible vehicle with the widest possible living space.
Transferring power from GM’s V8 engine is EarthCruiser’s proprietary four-wheel drive system designed with widely available components from the industry. The company explains the 6.6-liter engine fits EarthCruiser’s custom gearing and delivers high low-end torque on the road.
However, adapting the Isuzu platform to all-wheel drive is no easy task. The platform was designed for only one drive axle, but EarthCruiser modified it to fit 4×4 systems without touching the powertrain. The company removed the built-in chassis and replaced the suspension and driveline, and also paired an Atlas Fusion transfer case axle with an Auburn electronic locking differential.
EarthCruiser promises to continue to support older Fuso-based models with service and maintenance.
