Hyundai is quite active with prototypes for the next-generation Kona small SUV. These photos mark the second sighting of the test vehicle in less than a week, but this time our vision isn’t limited to the exterior. The camera got closer to the camouflaged Kona and took several shots of the interior. This is our best look so far at what’s happening in the greenhouse.
And what do we see? The Kona went digital, with what looked like a piece of glass spanning half the dashboard. Our sources suggest it could follow a format similar to the layout on the Ioniq 5, with a dedicated driver screen blending into the center infotainment display. With the thick cover over the dashboard, it’s hard to tell if the screen will be pinned or stand tall as an entity on its own. The laptop also obscures the passenger side of the dashboard, but we can see the vents and a bunch of controls below the center of the screen. It’s a similar design to the Ioniq 5.
On the outside, this new spy shot doesn’t reveal anything we haven’t discussed. Hyundai continues to fill the heavy camouflage on the front and rear with faux panels, making the vehicle look bigger than it really is. However, we expect the new Kona to grow a bit compared to the previous model. The split headlight design at the front will hold up, although it could get lower headlights with more vertical orientation to match Hyundai’s other current SUV design language.
An exhaust pipe seen on this prototype confirms the internal combustion power of some measure will make it to the next generation. Of course, the Kona is already available with a fully electric powertrain, and our spy sources say a next-generation Kona EV codenamed SX2e is in development. In this case, there’s supposedly the codename SX2n in the mix as well. Hyundai seems committed to maintaining the sporty version of the Kona.
The current thinking is that the next Kona will debut in 2023. As we have seen with other Hyundai models, it will likely appear first in the South Korean market, followed by the global market.
