The 2022 Volkswagen Taos failed to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award because it didn’t score well enough in two crash tests. In addition, the standard headlights receive a Marginal score for not providing adequate visibility.

In passenger side small overlap collision test, Tao’s body transforms into a living space for its inhabitants. This is enough for IIHS to provide an Acceptable rating crossover for this evaluation, which is one step below the top score of Good.

In the headrest evaluation, the seat on the Taos did not provide sufficient support for the doll’s head and neck in a simulated rear-end collision. IIHS gave the vehicle an Acceptable score in this test because of this performance

In four other IIHS crash tests, Taos received Good marks.

The agency is also testing the front crash prevention system. Taos Technology received a Base score in the vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation and Superior in the vehicle-to-vehicle test

For a 2022 model year vehicle to receive the Top Safety Pick award. It must have a Good rating in all six crash tests. Available front crash prevention systems must score Forward or Outstanding in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The available headlight options need to be rated as Good or Acceptable.

To earn the more prestigious Top Safety Pick+, standard headlights must earn a Good or Acceptable rating, in addition to meeting all the qualifications for other awards.

For vehicles of 2023, IIHS is making it even more difficult to get one of its awards. Side impact crash tests now occur at higher speeds and with a heavier load on the vehicle. A Good or Acceptable Score is required to be a Top Safety Pick, and a Good rating is required to be a Top Safety Pick+.

IIHS also added an evaluation of the prevention of pedestrian accidents at night. To become a Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn an Advanced or Superior rating.

Another tweak is that the standard headlights require a Good or Acceptable score for the vehicle to be a Top Safety Choice.
