There have been many rumors alluding to a new Dodge model called the Hornet over the years. The name comes from a 2006 concept that was supposed to launch in 2010, but those intermediary years weren’t good for the automaker or the global financial system. However, the name is still alive, and will be present on new Dodge products later this year.
That Detroit Free Press reports that Dodge brand CEO Tim Kuniskis confirmed that the Hornet will debut in 2022. The confirmation isn’t too surprising. In February, photos posted to Instagram allegedly revealed the Hornet for the first time. The photos show a partial clip of the crossover’s front and interior, both of which look very much like the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

The new Dodge Hornet is rumored to be sharing its foundation with the new Alfa crossover, which the Italian brand launched a few months ago. Dodge and Alfa are two brands that are part of Stellantis, a new mix between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group. If the leaked photos and rumors are true, Alfa and Dodge will share more than just platforms.
Last August, Hornet rumors alleged that the model would arrive with a PHEV powertrain. The Tonale offers such a setup, pairing a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a total of 272 horsepower (203 kilowatts). Rumors suggest it will have a larger 2.0-liter unit. Alfa also offers an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces 256 hp (191 kW), but there is no indication it will be available at Dodge.
Kuniskis said Dodge could debut the Hornet this August, which is when it hosted Roadkill Nights. It was also when the Woodward Dream Cruise happened, and thousands of people descended on Metro Detroit.
When the Dodge Hornet debuts later this year, it will be the first new Dodge product in more than a decade still on sale, which is when the current-generation Durango arrives. The Hornet will join forces with the Charger and Challenger, and we expect this compact crossover to produce several performance versions. Can we see the Hellcat one day?
