The new Toyota GR86 will debut in June 2021 to the delight of sports car enthusiasts everywhere. It went on sale in the US at the end of last year, but things are going a little slower across the pool. The orders bank for GR86 in the UK finally opened on 20 April, and closed just 90 minutes later when every car claimed.
Remember, it’s not for the launch edition or even the first year of production. Toyota says every single GR86 allocated to the UK in the two planned production years is now being fought for. The process is done entirely online to help ensure interested buyers have an equal chance of getting a car, but with two years’ worth of cars being bought in an hour and a half, not everyone gets what they want.

Unfortunately, except for the cancellation of the order, it will remain as it is. Toyota did start a waiting list for GR86 fans who missed out on orders, but so far, the automaker has remained steadfast in not adding any additional vehicles to the mix or extending production. As for how many GR86 coupes are destined for the UK, Toyota isn’t ready to share that information yet.
“The phenomenal response to the GR86 is a sign of how it fulfills its role as a pure sports car that is both affordable and thrilling to drive,” said Toyota Director of Operations (GB) Mark Roden. “Our Gazoo Racing engineering models – the GR Supra and GR Yaris – have generated tremendous buzz with performance and handling tailored to the competition, helping to raise expectations of what the GR86 will deliver.”
With a 2.4-liter flat-four that produces 228 horsepower (170 kilowatts) and 184 pound-feet (249 Newton-meters) of torque, the GR86 is on the verge of extinction in the affordable sports car segment. Equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, it sprints to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds but the real magic of the GR86 is its quietness in almost any environment. In our first road trip review, we found the Toyota enjoyable whether it was turning corners or just cruising home.
Orders for the GR86 may be full, but Toyota wants to remind people that the manual-equipped Toyota Supra will be available soon.
