Hyundai is the latest automaker to plunge into the strange world of NFT. What is NFT? According to Wikipedia, it is a “non-exchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain, a form of digital ledger, that can be sold and traded.” In short, it is a measure of digital content that is equipped with a unique identifier, which means it cannot be copied. In theory. For some, that makes it worthwhile. For others, not so much.
We will leave the NFT debate for all your readers to discuss in the comments. For now, all you need to know is what Hyundai does, um, something with its own NFT. Or actually, there seems to be some NFT, as the automaker launched social media channels on Twitter and Discord devoted solely to NFT. The video above serves as an announcement for the launch of this channel, and to mark the occasion, Hyundai will be releasing the 30 NFT Hyundai X Meta Kongz on April 20. That brings us to another question: what is the Hyundai X Meta? Kongz NFT?
Presumably, that’s what the video previews at the top of this article is about. We came to that conclusion for several reasons, with the main one being that the video is called Hyundai X Meta Kongz NFT Project. The 54-second clip opens with an undeniable callback to the classic film King Kong, mixed with eight-bit graphics depicting the OG video game Donkey Kong. Okay, that’s where Kongzo comes from, but from there, things get weird.
The Gorilla (which we think is called the Kongz) goes from eight bits to modern realism, where a classic Hyundai Pony hatchback falls from the sky. It might be worth mentioning that the environment for all of this looks like a cross between tron and Frozenand when it’s familiar, the car launches into space with a callback to ET before landing on the moon. The video ends with some strange crystal-looking objects on the windshield of the car, with the video stating “NFT shooting star, coming down soon.” Hey, we said it was weird.
So, what exactly is NFT here? That’s apparently part of the mystery. It’s also a mystery how you get it, as Hyundai is only referencing its new NFT social channel. And regarding the cost, that is also a mystery. But apparently, there will be 30 of them on April 20.
Friends, welcome to the strange world of NFT. Judging by Hyundai’s efforts here, this isn’t the only NFT coming from the brand. It’s also not the first NFT we’ve seen from a major automaker. Will other manufacturers also dive into this new digital realm? Only time will tell.
