In its recent United States Patent and Trademark Filing, GM submitted a design for an autonomous vehicle system designed to scale and train new drivers. This exciting use of autonomous driving technology will be used to assess new drivers and train them as they learn the basics of driving on public roads. This unique use of autonomous driving technology to train drivers instead of replacing them is a new take on the use of this exciting new technology.
The push for autonomous vehicles has captured a large part of the auto and tech industry as organizations work to continuously build smarter vehicles that require less driver input. GM defines an autonomous vehicle as a car or truck capable of sensing its environment and navigating with minimal driver input. GM specifically calls up sensors like lidar, image sensors like cameras, and GPS to name a few.
While the extensive use of different types of sensors has resulted in smarter vehicles, GM even acknowledged in a patent filing that there may be times when humans may have to take over and drive unaided autonomously. GM mentions times when humans might want to drive for personal satisfaction along with times when autonomous vehicles are in an unnavigable environment.
To prepare humanity for a future where they need to work together with their autonomous vehicles, GM’s new autonomous driving trainer was born. GM also mentions benefits that include a reduced instructor base, lower teaching costs, and better availability of trainer schedules. Student success will be measured by the various sensors used by autonomous vehicles to drive so that all trainee inputs will be measured appropriately. Based on the input, the car can provide real-time feedback as it serves to train student drivers to use things like the brake pedal, steering wheel, wheel and accelerator properly to name a few.
New vehicles like the Bolt EUV and Silverado EV showcase the future of GM products as the brand continues to work on implementing new technologies.
Autonomous vehicles will slowly bring out the features of the car as drivers become more comfortable behind the wheel. This is a far cry from today’s driver education vehicles which give new drivers complete control over the car or truck they are riding in.
