What does it take to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid in a drag race? To find out Brooks Weisblat from the DragTimes YouTube channel decided to challenge Herman Young from Demonology to a drag race. Herman brought with him his modified Dodge Demon to see if he had what it took to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid in a quarter-mile drag race.
The new Tesla Model S Plaid debuted in June 2021 as the most powerful Tesla to date. The Tesla Model S Plaid is one of the most powerful mass-production vehicles ever built thanks to its clever tri-motor all-wheel-drive arrangement. With one motor driving the front axle and an electric motor driving each wheel, the Tesla Model S Plaid produces 1,020 horsepower (761 Kilowatts) and 1,050 lb-ft (1,424 Newton Meters) of torque.
The Tesla Model S Plaid is not just a regular S model with an additional electric motor and receives a number of upgrades from the regular Model S. The electric motor used in the Model S Plaid is a new design that is all permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor. This state-of-the-art electric motor has a carbon fiber shell that wraps around the motor rotor for added power and lower weight. This motor can spin up to 20,000 rpm which is about 25% faster than the previous iteration of the Tesla electric motor.
Tesla claims a 0 to 60mph time of 1.99 seconds making it the fastest production vehicle on sale today. The normal Tesla model S achieves the same feat in 3.1 seconds but it is important to note that on the Tesla website the Plaid time has been reduced whereas the normal Model S has not. This approach makes the Plaid seem faster when in reality the normal Model S is an impressive machine in its own right.
To take on the Tesla Model S Plaid, we have a modified Dodge Demon from Demonology. When it debuted, the Dodge Demon was a very impressive car, however, stock was not enough for the Herman of Demonology. Its current form is a stripped-down race car with a new drag racing-only transmission, larger supercharger, ice-water cooling system, and drag-only wheel and tire settings. This Dodge Demon produces over 1,200 horsepower (895 Kilowatts) but is that enough to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid in drag racing?
