A man in Canada who sold a 2017 Cadillac Escalade made a surprising discovery after the vehicle was no longer in his possession. Using the myCadillac app, it still has the ability to geolocate the luxury SUV while traveling to its new owner in the United States.
Quebec La Facture delve into the story of Gilles Veilleux and the Cadillac Escalade that used to be his. Veilleux has installed the myCadillac app on his phone, which allows him to see the location of the SUV when he owns it, along with providing the ability to remotely lock and unlock doors, start the engine, and activate the horn/light.
Moments after he sold the vehicle, Veilleux opened the myCadillac app, and found that it was still connected to the Escalade. He also continues to receive notifications regarding vehicle maintenance. He said La Facture that the app allows him to see that the vehicle is traveling on the highway to the US. He tracked the vehicle until it ended up at the dealership in St. Louis, Missouri.
A few weeks later, Veilleux saw the Escalade move again, this time to its new owner’s house. La Facture journalists track new owners using GPS information from the myCadillac app. They informed the new owners of the situation. Later, news outlets asked Veilleux to show he still had control of the Escalade by turning the lights on and off, all from over 1,300 miles away.
Obviously, this can be very dangerous for buyers of used Cadillacs – or connected cars, for that matter. Veilleux wonders what could have happened if, instead of himself, a criminal had access to the app. Not only does it allow them to geolocate the vehicle and its owner, but it also poses a security risk as the app is able to exercise (some) control over the vehicle’s functions.
GM Canada declined to conduct an on-camera interview, but explained that in the small print of the myCadillac app, owners are instructed to notify Cadillac that the vehicle has been sold. The automaker also explained that it is the customer’s responsibility to delete the app after the vehicle changes hands.
Cadillac Society also note that OnStar, a working myCadillac app service, sometimes activates a prompt to prevent this condition. Displayed on the vehicle’s engine cycle, a prompt asks if the vehicle is still owned by the owner. Additionally, new owners of the Escalade can press the Blue OnStar button in the model to receive a free OnStar trial, which incorporates access to the myCadillac app. Doing so will disable the previous owner’s access to the Escalade.
